Assessment

Dual diagnostic assessment of an individual involves building a profile of the person’s practical medical support needs i.e. if he is receiving the correct treatment and a measurement of substance misuse. The assessment’s aim is to ensure the individual has all recognised medical needs secured and a clear understanding of the individual’s substance misuse problems, this assessment will directly inform the planning stage.

Planning

The planning stage begins with evaluation of the individual’s social and psychological background using the Outcome STAR. This recognised measurement tool works in three key areas:

  • Empowerment: allows the individual to see, through dialogue, the beliefs and skills that are needed for them to create change themselves.
  • Collaboration: trust between the key worker and individual is a key element of the planning process.
  • Integration: The process of completing the Outcomes Star is an integral part of working with the service user and it is intended to support as well as measure change. The assessment is also part of the treatment.

Training

Actions from the Outcome STAR fundamentally inform the training stage. The will involve a mutually agreed action plan that will consist of:

  • Substance misuse management
  • Employability skill development
  • Confidence & self-esteem building
  • Active listening
  • Art as therapy
